As cyclists embark on the Circuit Zolder in Heusden-Zolder, Limburg, they are greeted by the challenge and excitement that each turn and slope presents. Let's delve into a detailed description of this iconic circuit, segment by segment:
0./ Start
The journey begins with a burst of adrenaline as cyclists accelerate down the start/finish straight, building momentum for the challenges ahead. This initial stretch offers a relatively flat surface, allowing riders to settle into their rhythm and position themselves strategically for the upcoming chicane. There is space, there is room, but start pushing those pedals and power up.
1./ Earste Linkse
Turn 1 introduces riders to a challenging downhill section, with a steep gradient reaching up to 8%. Negotiating this ascent requires a delicate balance of power and finesse to maintain momentum while conserving energy. Turn in left and keep pushing.
2./ Sterrenwachtbocht
Following Turn 1, cyclists embark on a thrilling descent towards Turn 2, utilizing gravity to carry speed through the corner. The downhill slope demands focus and composure as riders navigate the twisty descent, preparing for the upcoming sequence of corners. Dive towards the Albertkanaal (and not into it please).
3./ Kanaalbocht
We’re at the lowest point of the circuit. Keep the speed up, use Newtons laws to keep going. Use the full width of the circuit and keep the perfect line here.
4./ Lucien Bianchibocht
Honor the 1968 Le Mans winner from Belgium and push those pedals hard. The circuit turns right, uphill with percentages of approximately 4%. Keep the big gear and generate power, straight lane ahead.
5./ Kleine Chicane
The first of 3, the Kleine Chicane, comprise a sweeping combination of corners that require smooth, fluid transitions to maintain speed and momentum. The terrain remains undulating, with subtle changes in gradient challenging riders to maintain optimal positioning and balance through the corners.
6./ Butte
Is it straight or is a turn ? We don’t care as long as you keep pedalling. A bit to the left, full speed ahead. Try to keep up with the group and go into the second part of circuit.
7./ Gilles Villeneuvechicane
We’re in the technical part now. Be careful on the chicane, take the right-left-right action with care. Don’t do like Gilles, we don’t want another chicane with your name on it.
8./ Terlamenbocht
A right turn with the possibility to get some speed. The corner ends into a straight with a leg-killing slope of only 1-2 %. Try to keep the pace, let those legs explode, almost there.
9./ Bodlerberghaarspelbocht
Hit the brakes, a short right one. It’s better to focus on the circuit then to have a look at the Bolderberg on your left. An inlier, a single small hill in its surroundings,… No time for geology, time to push after the brake, relaunch !
10./ Jochen Rindtbocht
A straightforward and fast S-turn towards the final straights. Almost there, pit lane and finish line just a few 100m’s away.
11./ Jackie Ickxbocht
If you want to swap with a team member, keep right and enter the pit. Keep your speed low and watch out for other contestants. If you want to keep pushing, take a quick left-right and go. It’s (almost) flat towards the finish line. Gear down, push harder, build up the speed, go for glory !
